Home Air Conditioning in Round Rock & Austin: Repair, Replace & Right-Size

Central Texas summers run your AC hard for half the year. Here's how cooling works, when to repair vs. replace, and why correct sizing matters more than square footage.

Learn

The basics

An air conditioner doesn't make cold — it moves heat out of your home using a refrigerant cycle. Efficiency is rated by SEER2; capacity is measured in tons.

  • How it cools: Refrigerant absorbs heat indoors at the evaporator coil and releases it outside at the condenser. The blower moves conditioned air through your ducts.
  • SEER2 & tonnage: SEER2 rates seasonal efficiency (higher = lower bills). Tonnage is capacity — 1 ton ≈ 12,000 BTU/hr — and should come from a Manual J load calculation.
  • Repair vs. replace signs: Under ~10 years with a minor fault usually means repair; 12–15+ years, frequent repairs, or a quote near half the cost of new usually favors replacement.

Your options

Repair the existing system, or replace it — what fits your home and budget?

Repair

Best for newer systems and small faults (capacitor, refrigerant leak, clogged drain). Lowest upfront cost; keeps an aging system going.

Replace (standard efficiency)

A right-sized new system restores reliability and warranty. Good value when the old unit is past its prime.

Replace (high efficiency / variable speed)

Higher SEER2 and better humidity control lower bills and improve comfort — higher upfront cost, faster payback the longer your cooling season.

An oversized AC short-cycles and leaves your home humid; an undersized one runs constantly and can't keep up in July. We size with a load calculation, not a rule of thumb.

Why is my AC running but not cooling?
Common causes are a dirty filter, low refrigerant from a leak, a frozen coil, or a failing compressor. Turn it off to protect the compressor and call us for same-day service.
What size AC do I need?
It depends on square footage, insulation, windows, and ductwork. We run a Manual J load calculation before recommending equipment.
Do you offer financing on replacements?
Yes — flexible financing is available so a new system doesn't have to wait. Estimates are always free.

Educational only — not a substitute for an on-site evaluation. Recommendations depend on your home, equipment, and local code, which change over time; confirm specifics with a licensed professional. Reviewed by the Holman Comfort Systems team · Last updated June 18, 2026.
